Proverbs 2:10-12
When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you, to deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks perverse things.
Every human enters this world with an innate ability and will to resist instruction and correction. Think of the most pleasant of children and their lovable innocence; and yet even that child must be continually guided, instructed and reproved lest they become an obnoxious “monster.” In short, none are born with an inherent desire to obey. Obedience and compliance to the Will of God is something that must be cultivated and developed within us as we mature. But with God’s help and by His grace, a person can achieve a place in their life where wisdom becomes second nature to them, where before the evil inclination was our default position.
To attain this goal, it must be as Solomon says: “wisdom enters your heart.” In other words, it has to be more than an intellectual assent; it must be something that becomes an integral part of the person’s innermost being. When this occurs, the knowledge of the Truth will not be an aversion but something desirable — something “pleasant to your soul.” Furthermore, the Truth accompanied by Wisdom is able to watch over us as we navigate life. If the things of God are in our heart, immoral thoughts will be replaced with “It is written.” Heresies and perversities, issues that may have been temptations and pitfalls before, can be avoided because Wisdom will “deliver you from the way of evil.”
Like anything that is of value, particularly those things that have eternal value, none will drop into our lap. Sound wisdom must be desired, and it must be pursued. Regarding things that are precious to Him, the Creator doesn’t hand them out like candy — it imparts them to those who can be trusted with these things of value. Just as we aren’t to cast our pearls before swine and see them “ground under foot,” God doesn’t give Godly wisdom to those who would use it for their own selfish reasons; He reserves it for those who have a heart to do what is right in His eyes. If your desire is to pursue righteousness, to avoid the way of evil, and to walk upright before Your Maker, the Lord give you the wisdom you need to succeed.
